One of the biggest obstacles, the New York actor faces is the audition of the “generic song.”

Actors often select songs they think will show their versatility, thereby increasing their opportunities to be cast in multiple ways. Often times, however, the casting director doesn’t know what to do with that actor. “Very talented, but not sure what they’re right for” is often the response.

Your job as the actor is to be as specific. To know what roles you are right for and show casting professionals that you can do the job of that role.

• Are you Glinda or Elphaba?
• Are you Marius or Javert?
• Are you Mary Poppins or Ursula?

Whichever you are, go in with music that shows you are that character. Make it easy for the casting director to know how to cast you.
