Talking on Pitch

Here’s the good news for those of you who currently won’t go to an acting audition because you feel that you can’t sing:

Don’t worry. If you can talk, you can sing.

The method that I developed at the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre for teaching actors to sing is as simple as painting by numbers.

It’s called talking … on pitch.

WHAT WE WORK ON
HOW WE DO IT
Allowing the air to start first so that the voice is activated with the released air.

This immediately eliminates any struggle and/or tension in the throat, using a simple physics principle called “The Bernoulli Effect”. This is the main thing I showed Norbert Leo Butz when he was doing RENT on Broadway that expanded his range and kept him from losing his voice.
Arrow
Daily breathing and individualized vocal exercises

Giving the sound full access to the resonating cavities in our chest, throat and head via clean and clear articulation of our “talking on pitch”.

This technique uses another simple physics principle called “The Coupled System,” whereby the sound regenerates the initial vibration, much like the sound resonating in a saxophone or other wind instrument.
Arrow
A five-step procedure that infuses the breathing and vocal exercise into every song you do

Linking the sound together in an uninterrupted and unimpeded way, creating a regular even tone, and sustaining that released through line of tone on open vowels.
Arrow
Linking exercises in conjunction with a 3-step open vowel exercise, in order to gain and sustain the through line of sound
